Ready for the first day

There’s a moment every parent knows. It’s the night before school starts, and a child sets a new backpack by the door so it’s the first thing they see in the morning.

For a lot of families in our community, that moment doesn’t come easy. When the budget is already stretched between rent, groceries, and the electric bill, a full set of school supplies can feel out of reach. And kids notice. They notice who has a new backpack and who doesn’t. They notice who has a pencil and who has to ask.

So this summer, you changed that. Through our School Backpack Program, 2,353 children from kindergarten through high school walked into their classrooms with a new backpack on their shoulders, packed with everything they needed to start the year strong. That happened because of you.

What your generosity packed

From late May through the end of August, volunteers filled backpack after backpack, grade by grade, and our ministry partners carried them into neighborhoods where they were needed most. When the final count came in, here’s what you made possible:

• 2,353 backpacks, sized for every age from kindergarten to high school
• 43,764 individual school supplies
• 5,544 pencils, plus 1,515 mechanical pencils for our high schoolers
• 6,446 black and blue pens, and 1,058 red ones for checking work
• 2,179 glue sticks, 1,311 boxes of crayons, and 1,042 boxes of colored pencils
• 4,376 notebooks (spiral and composition) and 2,021 packs of filler paper
• 1,626 large pencil pouches, 1,613 rulers, and 2,017 erasers

Behind every one of those numbers is a child. A kindergartner who got her very first backpack. A third grader who didn’t have to borrow scissors. A high school student who walked in with a binder, highlighters, and the quiet confidence that comes from being prepared.

That’s what 43,764 supplies add up to: kids who feel ready and cared for.

And a special thank you to our ministry partners who received these backpacks and placed them directly into the hands of children and families in their neighborhoods. You are the last mile, and you make it personal.

Why it matters

A backpack is a small thing. But to a child, it says something big: Someone believed I was worth getting ready for.

Scripture reminds us, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done” (Proverbs 19:17). Every notebook, box of crayons, and glue stick you gave this summer was that kind of love. It told 2,353 children they matter.

The work continues

The school year is underway, and our focus is already turning toward Christmas. Right now, our warehouse needs socks and underwear for the more than 2,600 children we’ll serve through our Christmas workshop, especially boys’ sizes. A cash gift goes furthest, because we can buy in bulk at a fraction of retail.
